Improving Literacy

Rooted in Faith, Growing in Love, Thriving in Mission

Understanding that literacy is a necessary component of raising competent, empathetic, and godly children into competent, empathetic, and godly adults, the UMC of the Pines strives to support literacy efforts in our community. We have been a supporter of the Jasper ISD Literacy Initiative “B.A.R.K. EXPRESS”, helping to fund renovations to an old school bus that will operate as a mobile outreach to families in our area. Volunteers help students choose a book free of charge, and Jasper ISD employees will be on hand to help parents navigate through ways they can support their children through the educational process. The B.A.R.K. Express gives books to children of all ages, including babies, through their BARK Baby Bag project, which not only provides books to families with infants, but provides a guidebook for parents to help them get their littlest ones ready for school.

Our belief is that everyone should be able to read what they like. To help support that, the church maintains a Little Free Library next to the front drive on Verna Street. Books, both for children and adults. Books are free for the taking. All we ask is that users leave books when and if they can and that no one person takes ALL the books!
